5. Coud Van Giruet (Elemental Galade)

Ok, Coud may be a bit pants to start with, but like all Pirates he has a hidden strength and a heart of gold.  He rescues the girl and battles the forces of evil to help her return to her homeland, just like the noble swashbuckler he is.

4. Emeraldas (Galaxy Express 999/Queen Emeraldas)

She's got the pirate scar, she's got the outfit and she's got the strange angular features.  Yep it can only be Emeraldas, captain of the pirate spaceship Queen Emeraldas.  Not only is she idolised by many, she also has the very cool weapon, a combination of a rapier and a blaster, which fires a laser from its tip.  Awesome.

3. Captain Dola (Laputa: Castle In The Sky)

She may seem like a tough old battleaxe on the outside, but Ma Dola is a woman with a heart as big as her ample bosom.  Her multi-national crew of 'sons' hints at an, ahem, adventurous youth, but the older Dola is a determined and resourceful matriarch who is a strong as granite and likes nothing more than treasure and hard-livin'.  An example to all aspiring pirates!

2. Captain Harlock (Space Pirate Captain Harlock)



Facial scar?  Check.  Eye Patch?  Check.  Massive coat and collar?  Check.  Boat?  Er...nope, spaceship.  Despite having the most cliched appearance on our list (and sporting a killer mullet), Harlock battles through space against totalitarian regimes and always remains noble.  He is the typical romantic version of the pirate life and just goes to show you don't have to be a git to get ahead.

1. Monkey D. Luffy (One Piece)

He claims he is going to be king of pirates and, considering how hard he is, I am inclined to believe him.  Anyone who can run a ship with only four people for the majority of this series is a good pirate in my book, plus his ability to strech, beat up the beat guys and be an all round likeable dude make him the top pirate in this top five.  He may be a very cheesy man as he often preaches teamwork, believing in one's self and being nice to others, but at least he does it in a likeable way.  Unlike a certain annoying tosspot of an orange ninja.....
