Tales of Earthsea UK Release Date Confirmed!

Tales From Earthsea, the latest Studio Ghibli film and debut film for Hayao Miyazaki's son Goro, was confirmed for UK release at the turn of the year, but only now has a release date been announced!  Distributor Optimum Asia have listed the film as receiving a UK theatrical release on 3rd August, no DVD release date has been announced at present, but we wouldn't be surprised to see it before the year's out.  Interestingly we're getting the film before America does due to licensing issues preventing a US release at the moment!  More news on the cinema run as and when we get it.

Anime at The British Museum

The British Museum in London is to screen several anime films alongside showcases of Japanese arts and crafts over the next few months.  The Museum, which is located just a couple of minutes walk away from Tottenham Court Road tube station, is showing eight films during its three month Crafting Beauty in Modern Japan exhibition.  The programme is interesting to say the least, it includes what we believe to be the first UK screening of the first Naruto movie and a very rare screening of Osamu Tezuka's unfinished sci-fi masterpiece Phoenix 2772: Space Firebird.  Many of the films are free to see, although pre-booking is required, and the ones that aren't are dirt cheap - just £3 (£2 concessions).  All of those shown in September are in Japanese with English subtitles and have introductions by anime expert Paul Gravett.  Here's the film schedule:

Saturday 28th July
2.30pm - Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow (English dub, free)

Saturday 4th August
2.30pm - Porco Rosso (English dub, free)

Saturday 11th August
2.30pm - Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (English dub, free)

Friday 7th September
6.30pm - Phoenix 2772: Space Firebird (subtitled, £3 (£2 conc.) intro by Paul Gravett)

Thursday 13th September
6.30pm - Barefoot Gen (subtitled, £3 (£2 conc.) intro by Paul Gravett)

Friday 14th September
6.30pm - Akira (subtitled, £3 (£2 conc.) intro by Paul Gravett)

Friday 28th September
6.30pm - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Solid State Society (subtitled, free, intro by Paul Gravett).  Manga Entertainment are running a cosplay competition at this screening and invite fans to come dressed as anime and manga characters to win prizes!

Saturday 29th September
4.30pm - Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (subtitled, £3 (£2 conc.) intro by Paul Gravett)

To book places and for more information on the above screenings, as well as information about the other events in the superb Crafting Beauty in Modern Japan exhibition, click here!

Turning Japanese!

Anyone who's been to the MCM Expos in London and Telford will have noticed that anime and Japanese culture is kind of taking over.  The organisers have noticed too, and that's why this month (21st-22nd to be precise) they are launching the JapanEX at the ExCel Centre in London's Docklands!  The event promises to be a celebration of everything Japanese, with anime companies like Manga Entertainment and ADV Films rubbing shoulders with gothic lolita fashionistas and taiko drummers.  The event promises to give you the opportunity to experience all aspects of Japanese culture, from the traditional to the modern.  There will be plenty there for any fan of anime and manga to enjoy, although cosplayers be warned - you have to pre-register for the Cosplay Masquerade.  Head over to www.mcmexpo.net/japanexlondon for more info, cosplay registration and to buy tickets for the event!
