Poké-On!

Just when you thought the Pokémon franchise may be dead it rises once more from the ashes!!  A June release has been pencilled in for the 5th Pokémon movie - Pokémon Heroes - which shows there is life in the old dog yet!  Webmaster Tom has a bit of a soft spot for Pikachu & co so there may well be a review on this site shortly after the films release...

Endurance Anime

Anyone fancy a nine and a half hour marathon of some of the latest anime?  If so head down to the Curzon cinema in Soho on Saturday 5th/Sunday 6th February, where the Sci-Fi-London 4's Anime:Allnight kicks off at 12 midnight!  Four brand spanking new films are in the lineup, starting with ADV Films' US-made film Lady Death, followed by the Bubblegum Crisis spinoff Parasite Dolls, critically acclaimed Korean animation Sky Blue (aka. Wonderful Days), and series spinoff RahXephon The Movie.  Free tea & coffee are available all night and you also get a can of Red Bull and some Ben & Jerry's ice-cream into the bargain!!  Check out the Sci-Fi-London 4 website for more details...

High Es-Steam!

Seems that everyone wants to see a bit of Katsuhiro Otomo's long awaited epic Steam Boy.  Demand for tickets for the main showing of the film as part of the Sci-Fi-London 4 festival has been so high that the organisers have added a second screening to the festival bill!  The new showing is at the Curzon Soho cinema on Thursday 3rd February at the unfortunately late time of 11pm, those interested would do well to book tickets soon as this is likely to sell out as quickly as the first showing.  For more details check out the Sci-Fi-London 4 website.

Let's Beyblade!

Just in case anyone is interested, Play.Com are currently listing the 6 disc boxset of Beyblade for the excellent price of Ł11.99!!!  Here's a direct link:  Beyblade Boxset.  It is interesting to note that this is only 49p more than the 3 disc boxset, which is a bit odd...

Play the Game!!

The Playstation 2 is quickly becoming the console to get if you are a fan of anime, and this year sees two more surprise releases.  It seems that we will be getting both Yu Yu Hakusho: Dark Tournament ( March), Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex (April) this year, both of which many thought would not make it outside of Japan and America.  Yu Yu Hakusho: Dark Tournament is a cel-shaded beat em up very much in the style of the recent Dragonball Z: Budokai games, whereas Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex is a third person adventure/actioner with similar gameplay to Tomb Raider, but with more focus on action.  Both games are definitely worth a look and tie in nicely with the releases of the corresponding anime series.  However, anime tie-ins never seem to be rated highly in this country so it'll be interesting to see how they are received by the gaming press.

Over the Limit

Looks like the two biggest UK anime distributors are going to be bringing us some nice limited edition bonuses with a couple of their forthcoming releases!!  First up is ADV Films' February release of Neon Genesis Evangelion: Platinum Edition, the first pressings of which will come with a limited edition metallic finish slipcase!  It is likely that the first pressings of the upcoming volumes will also have these slipcases - the Region 1 releases all have, although in the US this wasn't limited to the first pressings.  Not to be outdone MVM have announced that the special edition of the reissued Yu Yu Hakusho vol 1 - due in March - will come with free t-shirt!!  It has already been announced that the special edition will come with a box designed to hold the entire series, so the fact we get a t-shirt too is a great bonus!

Out This Week:

Robotech: Invasion (Take 2 Interactive) - Playstation 2 & Xbox

The latest console game spin-off from the popular cartoon constructed by editing together a trio of anime series.  The game combines first person shooting and third person vehicle piloting as you battle the invading forces of the Invid, and is a sequel to the average Robotech: Battlecry.  A Gamecube version will no doubt follow in a couple of months.

Happy Neo Year!

Issue 2 of Neo - the only UK's only anime and manga mag - is out now and is well worth picking up!!  This issue contains features on Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Sailor Moon and Ghost in the Shell, as well as a preview chapter of Tokyopop's manga Eerie Queerie and the usual variety of anime and manga reviews.  There is also plenty of stuff for fans of live action Asian cinema too, including features on Sonny Chiba's Streetfighter (nothing to do with the game) and the absolutely gorgeous Ziyi Zhang, so get down your local WHSmith and buy it!!

Money's No Longer Too Tight for Kenshin

It seems that ADV Films have gotten right into the spirit of things at the start of 2005 by lowering the RRP of the Samurai X Collection Boxset to Ł19.99!!!  The Samurai X (otherwise known as Rurouni Kenshin) boxset contains the Samurai X Movie as well as the three OVAs - including Samurai X: Trust, which is one of our Essential Films.  If that isn't good enough it seems that Amazon UK have gone more than a little barmy and dropped the price on their site even further to a wallet-friendly Ł10.97!!!  Don't miss out on this utter bargain!!!

January is traditionally a quiet month for MVM, but their two releases - the continuation of romantic comedy Love Hina and sci-fi actioner Kiddy Grade - are first up this month.  However, the month really gets going on the 17th when Beez (hopefully) bring us the frequently delayed Cowboy Bebop vol 1 and Gundam Wing boxsets 4 & 5, and ADV Films unleash two new licenses - Gad Guard and Get Backers.  On top of this ADV bring a trio of fantasy titles - Final Fantasy Unlimited, Rune Soldier vol 4 and Slayers Premium - as well as the insane Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi.  The month progresses with volume 2 of the hugely popular Cowboy Bebop (Beez's releases can be a bit like buses, you wait ages for them and then two come along at once...), the CGI actioner Galerians: Rion - which features music from the likes of Fear Factory and Slipknot on its English dub track - and the saccharine sweetness of Hello Kitty in a budget 4 disc boxset.  Lastly January will see Columbia TriStar bring us a double disc release of the start of the Astro Boy series recently shown on BBC1, and ILC Prime's anime brand Animazing gets going with the release of sci-fi OVA The Humanoid.
