Death & Rebirth is two separate films combined so I shall look at each separately.

Firstly Death is really a recap filling those in of the events that transpired during episodes 1 – 24 of the series.  This can confuse yet also be linear - a huge collection of flash images and emotions crammed together and rehashed in a way to totally confuse the viewer, it is like a strobe light on full effect.

The story jumps backwards and forwards, up and down, from one character to the next, from calm to frantic, from battle to peace and from sad to happy.  The animation is masterful and the visuals clean although some of the cuts are jerky, reflecting the rushed timeline and limited budget that Gainax worked to in order to get the series (as the film does mainly comprise of scenes from the series) done on time.

Rebirth is equally praiseworthy and details the events shortly after the battle with the thirteenth Angel, it sets you up for the epic conclusion of the final film – End. Rebirth is an interesting blend of non-stop action and truly moving acting and the cliffhanger ending will really keep you on the edge of your seat.  This is first class viewing.
