I expected a lot.  Landmark animation, fantastic action and a great lead.  Did it have this?  Well…nearly, but not quite.

Action-wise you can’t go wrong – Saya is a great lead character who fights with a sword and kills vampires in various gruesome ways.  She is also strong, opinionated, plays by her owns rules and she wears a sailor outfit.  The camera angles used for the action scenes are great with every angle being done to perfection and speed lines are not to over the top.

Animation is also fantastic as it is a subtle mix of CGI and cel animation.  In fact in some scenes you may not even notice the CGI.  It is also set mainly at night, so this produces some outstanding lighting effects which in places surpass those of Akira.

So what’s wrong with it?  Well a few things spoiled it for me and this was mainly the lead demon – an awful creation which looks like something straight out of Urotsukidoji or Devilman and will make you hold your head in your hands and shout NOOOO!!! at how it reminds you of those awful demon horror anime from the early 90’s.  Why was it used?  Other demons are not quite as bad and when they communicate silently it is very creepy, but the when they scream they look like bad guys out of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and again this spoiled it for me.

Overall I do recommend it as it does deliver in the action stakes and has some memorable sequences but I’m afraid the appallingly bad enemies cannot be forgiven as they turn this otherwise good film into a cheesy demon anime.  It is good but just not as good as a landmark film should be.
