Despite being a very popular manga author we still have yet to find a pic of Kiyohiko Azuma, so we have represented him with a pic of the only recurring male character from Azumanga Daioh - Mr Kimura!
Born on 27th May 1968, Kiyohiko Azuma began his career creating short four
panel comic strips for various Japanese publications. Stemming from
this came his most famous and popular work - Azumanga Daioh.
Azumanga Daioh caused a stir in Japan due to its unique style and
entirely character driven comedy and was one of the relatively few four
panel strips to make the jump to anime and to a Western release. |

Alongside Azumanga Daioh, Kiyohiko Azuma has completed several other titles, including two short manga stories Try! Try! Try! and Wallaby, both of which were collected in self released art collections, and the spiritual successor to Azumanga Daioh - Yotsuba&. Yotsuba& features characters who originally appeared in Try! Try! Try! and is currently being serialised in Dengeki Daioh magazine in Japan. Following the success of both the anime and manga versions of Azumanga Daioh the rights to Yotsuba& were snapped up by ADV Manga for western release and it seems certain to match the success of its predecessor in the US.
With a unique style and a marked avoidance of the usual manga stereotypes
of fan service and fantasy, Kiyohiko Azuma's work is a breath of fresh air
and he will no doubt enjoy more success and recognition in the future.
